President Obama has urged Congress to pass a cash-for-clunkers measure to help revitalize the U.S. auto industry, which is surviving largely on government bailouts.
Anna Zornosa, general manager of Dealix, a California company that provides Internet marketing services to auto dealers nationwide, said the program has the potential to help turn things around.
"If this bill passes in any form, it's going to really be a catalyst," she said. Zornosa said the average age of a car in the United States is now 9.4 years, the highest level in at least 20 years. She said the program would encourage consumers who might otherwise buy a large, relatively inefficient new car to consider more economical models.
However, skeptics maintain that the cash-for-clunkers measure won't provide significant energy or environmental benefits.
