Calling All Revolutionary Dealers…for Automotive News

This November, Automotive News will publish a major celebration of American auto retailers called "The Visionary Dealer." In this section, Automotive News will profile 50 dealers whose innovations changed the automobile industry. They are looking for the most far-sighted dealers of the past and present, the ones whose brilliant ideas and execution changed how vehicles are sold to the public. Automotive News is dividing the feature into two sections - dealers from throughout the history of the automotive industry and today's dealers.

They need your nominations.
Automotive News is looking for individual retailers who were visionary in any important aspect of the business: growth; customer service; advertising and promotion; service and repair; management; organization; factory relations; architecture; training; technology; Internet; customization; new business models; or anything that had to do with running a successful auto dealership.

Who were/are the great ones and why? Please send your nominations to: ahatch@cobalt.com to be forwarded on to Automotive News’s editorial team.

Auto Dealers Believe the "Cash for Clunkers" Bill Will Help Revive U.S. Auto Sales
The nation's auto dealers, pummeled by auto sales that are the lowest in 17 years, are optimistic that the "Cash for Clunkers" bill now moving through Congress will positively impact U.S. auto sales. However, dealers are also concerned that sales are being frozen while the bill is being debated because consumers are waiting for vouchers to become available for trade-ins before purchasing a new car.

These are the results of a national survey of U.S. auto dealers conducted this month by Dealix, a division of Cobalt, and the leading provider of new cars and used cars automotive sales leads for dealers and OEMs. The Senate is poised to consider a version of the bill, which will provide consumers credits of up to $4,500 if they trade in cars with low mileage per gallon for more fuel efficient vehicles.

Approximately 400 dealers responded to the survey and expressed strong hopes for the legislation:

  • Over 85% said the legislation would stimulate car purchases to some degree, with over 26% of that group saying it would increase purchases "a lot."
  • And, almost 60% believe the program will help the environment.

Mobile Growing in Importance
According to comScore, Inc., among an audience of 63.2 million people who accessed news and information on their mobile devices in January 2009, 22.4 million (35%) did so daily, more than double the size of the audience last year.

"Over the course of the past year, we have seen use of mobile Internet evolve from an occasional activity to being a daily part of people's lives," observed Mark Donovan, senior vice president, mobile, comScore. "This underscores the growing importance of the mobile medium as consumers become more reliant on their mobile devices to access time-sensitive and utilitarian information."

Young males are the most avid users of mobile news and information, says the report, with half of 18 to 34-year-old males engaging in the activity. Read the full comScore press release.

Cobalt recently launched its best-in-class mobile web interface solution.
